I'm really happy that I chose HKLS

Ms Sarah Mitchell from Australia

Cantonese Beginner Full Day (3/8 - 31/8/2015)

"I wanted to learn Cantonese so that I'd be able to speak more easily with people in Hong Kong and learn more about Hong Kong's culture. The location of HKLS was good for me and the reviews I read on the website were very positive.

I'm really happy that I chose HKLS. For me, one of the hardest parts of learning a language is feeling very nervous and self-conscious about mispronunciation and making mistakes. But in my class, my teacher created a very comfortable environment so that I didn't feel embarrassed about trying to speak. He helped me a lot with my Cantonese, including topics that I was interested in that weren't included in that particular course. All the people who worked at the centre that I had contact with were very friendly.

I was only able to take a month of classes at HKLS, and while I have a LOT more to learn, my Cantonese-speaking friends have told me they think my speaking and writing has improved during that time. My experience with HKLS was very good, and I'd definitely return for classes if I had the chance. 多谢晒 James 同 Branda!"

It gave us more exposure to variety in spoken Mandarin

Mr. Jerome Parisse-Brassens from Australia (the gentleman on the right)

Mandarin Beginners to Upper Intermediate Full-day class (28/9, 2010 -10/1, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I chose to study Mandarin at Hong Kong Language School for two reasons: 1) Its location, in Wan Chai, in the heart of Hong Kong Island, made it very easy to get to; 2) The course I chose was reasonably priced.

2, How’s the school environment?

-- The school environment is great: Clean, bright classrooms; I especially liked the fact that the walls were used as blackboards, very ingenuous indeed; There is a computer for everyone's use during breaks; and there is an ample supply of biscuits, tea and coffee (and a great view of Wan Chai from the large windows).

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- I enjoyed my class, my teachers and my fellow students who came from all walks of life, including from various countries. Classes are relaxed, but at the same time focussed; 50 minutes of class with a ten minute break seems about right.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- I had two teachers, Carol and Mendy, who were both great to learn from. In fact, they had different styles and complemented each other really well. I was a little surprised at first to see one teacher being replaced by another, without any kind of logic, but it worked, and the transition between both of them was almost always smooth. It was also great that they came from different areas of China and had therefore a different accent and a different way of speaking, as it gave us more exposure to variety in spoken Mandarin. I definitely learned more than what I expected

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- I have reached the advanced level now and need to get out there and practice my Mandarin skills in real life situations. I will be spending a few weeks in China soon and this will be a perfect opportunity to test my language skills outside the school environment.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

-- I would definitely recommend the school to potential and future fellow students, especially to beginners, as I believe this is where the strength of the school lies

my experience at the school has really been incomparable

Ms Elisabetta Cavallo from Italy

Cantonese Beginner Full Day (10/8 - 14/8/2015)

"Although I had the chance to spend only a short period of time at Hong Kong Language School, my experience at the school has really been incomparable.

The environment is nice and welcoming, the people I've met while in there were all extremely kind and the location is easy to reach by public transport and it's very central so that it'll be easy for you to explore Hong Kong after class.
I attended a Beginner I course of Mandarin and I have been fully satisfied with my choice for the school! My teacher was simply amazing: very precise, friendly and open to share both her experience and knowledge with me!

I strongly recommed both the school and the course I attended, I'm sure you won't regret choosing it!"

The teacher was very polite and patient with us

Ms. Deepti Malik from India

Mandarin Beginners Level 1 to 4 Day Time class (18/1 -18/3, 2011)

Cantonese Beginners Level 1 – from 3/11, 2011 until now

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I chose it because the reviews about the school on the website were very positive. The place is also located close to my house and so was easily accessible.

2, How’s the school environment?

--The environment at school is friendly

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--The class atmosphere is open and friendly. The teachers and students interact on a one-on-one basis. There is no hesitation in asking questions which the teacher answers very patiently.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--The teacher was very polite and patient with us. She made it a point to mingle with us at a personal level as well which made us more interested in our lessons. She also went a step forward to teach us writing chinese characters which was over and above her duty. The class was effective though I think the no. of characters that one learns everyday get a bit much by the 3rd and 4th level. But yes, I did learn what I expected and maybe more.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Yes but it also depends on my time schedule in the coming months. I may want to learn beginners level Cantonese next.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--Yes i have already recommended a lot of friends.

I just hope I can continue to improve from over here and I had best not lose everything!

Mr Kelvin Cheong from Canada

Mandarin Intermediate Full Day (16/7 - 9/9/2015)

"I have to say, at first it was difficult to gauge my progress and see what I could accomplish in just two months of daily classes.  However, after a few attempts at conversing with native Mandarin speakers, I became pleasantly surprised to see how long I could keep the conversation going, (despite still struggling with my accent and limited vocabulary at this stage).  Even people who I've known prior to this course were quite surprised at my progress.

On top of the speaking, I originally wanted to focus strictly on just verbal, yet these same friends were quite impressed at my improvement in reading and writing as well.  Now I can actually order more food!

I originally chose HKLS due to the competitive pricing with other schools nearby.  I found the learning environment to be quite good and the atmosphere to be comfortable.  At first I was a little taken back when there weren't enough students at my level and the class duration was suddenly reduced.  However, in retrospect I actually think this became a great thing because this allowed the teacher to focus directly on me, and I also realized that doubling the class length would actually have been quite challenging to remain focused for so long.

I think the duration and the teacher Vera 老师 were wonderful.  I could not have asked for anything more.

I think had I extended my stay in Hong Kong I would have definitely continued my education at HKLS and would definitely (in fact already) have recommended HKLS to my friends.

When a couple friends saw that I had gone from barely being able to read a few words, to writing entire sentences right before their eyes, they suddenly became shocked, intrigued, and now wanted to know more so that they could do the same.

没想到两个月可以进步那么多!

Thank you very much for everything.  I just hope I can continue to improve from over here and I had best not lose everything!"

Branda and Mini are always smiling, that's great at the morning

Louis Ver from France

Mandarin Beginners level 1 to Upper Intermediate (8/8, 2011- 9/3, 2012)

Chinese Reading & Writing level 1 (30/1 – 10/2, 2012)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- Before choose the school I check lot of private lesson, and i choose them for the location (very convenient, and the price is very good.

2, How's the school environment?

-- Very good, if you arrive sleepy at the morning and forgot to take your breakfast, you can take a coffee and eat snack. You have all what you need for quiet and serious study. Branda and Mini are always smiling, that's great at the morning.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- I got 4 teachers ( Lily / Helen / Carol and Audrey )in 6 months, they are all nice, talkative, always try to help you. Every Classroom had good atmosphere, we study a lot but also laugh a lot with our putonghua. As soon as you have good classmates and teacher learn is easier.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- I travel a lot in China with my company, so during 6 months i saw the difference between start and now. Of course I'm not fluent Chinese but i understand very well and can talk to Chinese people.

I learn what i had expected maybe more, but i now i finish the lesson i continue to learn everyday at home in the street, ...

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- If I have time, yes i will. I'm French and i have strong accent when i speak, to practice speaking with a teacher can correct my accent and make me a fluent speaker.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- I already recommend HKLS to my friend, and he is happy too.

the classes can be referred to as “effective” and “constantly proceeding”...

Mr Arne Finster from Germany

Mandarin Beginner & Lower Intermediate Full Day (6/6 - 1/8/2014)

My name is Arne, I am from Germany and I was enrolled in a full-time Mandarin class at Hong Kong Language School (HKLS) in the time from June to August 2014. I started with (absolute) “beginner-level” and proceeded to “lower intermediate-level” over time. During that time I took part in private lessons as well as group lessons.

Having completed the course, please find my opinion on HKLS and its teachers/lessons below.

School

The school itself is very well located in Wan Chai. It is a 2 min-walking distance from Wan Chai MTR-station and one can have lunch break at one of the several little restaurants around, which also are just steps away.

The administrative staff of HKLS is very flexible in scheduling classes meeting one’s personal timetable. Free beverages and pastries/cookies provide a nice meeting place for students to chat during their breaks.

Teachers/classes

All the classes I attended were held in an amicable and personal atmosphere. During the lessons there was a constant adjustment to the student according to speed or revision of something already learnt. In that respect – or exactly because of it – time was never “dawdled”, meaning one finished one chapter of the book in one lecture.  Furthermore, teachers often explained a word’s etymology, which helped a lot constructing personal mnemonics and they gave some interesting information about cultural background. Hence, the classes can be referred to as “effective” and “constantly proceeding”.

Books/study materials

All the study materials follow the module principle. Each unit consists of a vocabulary list, key sentences/common expressions, and several conversations. All chapters were recorded and are provided as an MP3-file to the student at the very beginning of the classes. Self-explanatory, these audio-files make personal revision at home much easier.

Although various numbers of topics are covered by the books, one quickly can begin to link previous chapters together. Therefore one does not only have the impression of learning a few sentences for one topic, which stand isolated thereafter, but is able to hold (basic but coherent) conversations of some length. As a matter of fact exactly this keeps up the motivation.

Although I leave Hong Kong (at least for now) I warmly recommend HKLS to anyone for the reasons mentioned above.

Very supportive and patient with me

Chloe Qiu from Australia, Chinese (the lady on the right)

Cantonese Beginners Level 1 for Mandarin Speakers (27/2 – 9/3, 2012)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

I visited a few other schools before deciding to go with Hong Kong Language School because it offered the most flexible hours, a very competitive price and the friendliest staff!

2, How's the school environment?

The school is very easy to get to and the class studios are very cozy. The staff are extremely friendly and supportive. Loved their morning tea as well!

3, How's the class atmosphere?

I originally signed up for a group class but I was the only student so it became a one-on-one class which was awesome.

4. How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

I couldn’t have been happier with my teacher, Jaime. At first I was a bit shy because my Cantonese pronunciations were poor. However, Jaime was very supportive and patient with me. She had such a fun and relaxing teaching style that just two classes later, I was able to chat with her about Cantonese pop stars and my business operations using words and phrases. By the end of level 1, I could carry on a basic conversation and understand most of the local news. I never thought that I could progress this fast. All credits to Jaime.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

I will definitely come back for more classes because I won’t be able to achieve the same level of progression on myself.

6. Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

I highly recommend the Hong Kong Language School. The school writes its own teaching materials and have the most flexible course schedule anywhere in HK. Joining HKLS is one of the best investment I’ve made in a while!

she helped me to learn a lot of things which were not on the coursebook but related to my work

Margarita Filipchuk from Russia

Mandarin Beginner Private Tuition (15/5 - 23/7/2014)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- The school has a very convinient location and I think there is a very personalised attitude to everyone. For me, I could not join group classes because of my work schedule, but after I contacted the school, the reply was very quick and there was an option of private tuitition for a reasonable price. The application procedure was very easy and effective.

2, How's the school environment?

--The overall atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, also there is a small area where one can enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and snacks before or after the class and the staff in general is very positive and professional in terms of organisation, especially Mini Cheung who was very helpful and always replied quickly even to difficult and last minute requests.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--My Mandarin classes were always well organised and I enjoyed them a lot. I think the atmosphere in general is very inspiring and this is what kept me motivated in learning such a difficult language.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teacher was Zoe Zheng, she is a native mandarin speaker from Shanghai. I am very thankful to her because she could always understand what I need to learn and how my progress was going. She is a very open minded and cheerful person, and she helped me to learn a lot of things which were not on the coursebook but related to my work, which was very important for me. Actually I learned much more than I expected and I felt a lot of support from her.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--If I come back to work in Hong Kong I would like to continue my classes for sure. Thanks to my teacher I believed that I can learn Chinese and that it is not so impossible as I thought in the beginning :)

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Definetely yes. In my working place there are some foreigners who are interested in learning Mandarin and I already told them about my expirience in Hong Kong Language School. I am sure that it is a very good place in Hong Kong to learn either Mandarin or Cantonese. Also I recommend the school to my friends who actually live in Russia but want to come for a short period to study the basic language. I think that this environment is good for them to start. First class to each and everyone from the school who helped me on my way!

The environment is very friendly and extremely welcoming

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- We visited a couple of schools and found the HK Language school to be very inviting. Also we had heard from a few people that they would recommend it.

2, How's the school environment?

-- The environment is very friendly and extremely welcoming.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--We thoroughly enjoyed our classes as the teachers were very helpful and patient, as well as being a lot of fun.

4, How's your teacher?

-- Our teachers were excellent, and always went out of their way to explain the things we struggled with. Was your class effective? As we are very mature age students (!) we struggled a bit with the pace, however we find that we have learned a lot and will be able to revise at our own pace now. Did you learn what you had expected? We have recieved a good foundation, and are able to converse as well as could be expected in just 4 weeks.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- We hope to! We feel it would be beneficial to add to what we have already learned.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Of course we will recommend HK Language school to friends. Mostly because of the encouragement given and the 'family' atmosphere.

I have already recommend it to friends and family, because of how good, experience and well trained their teachers were...

Mairead Ross from Australia

Mandarin Beginner & Lower Intermediate Full Day (5/3 - 2/5/2014)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I looked all over the internet at all my different options for studying Mandarin in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Language School was the only place that good value, small so I knew I would get good teachers and good quality teaching material, not also not too small or too new.

2, How's the school environment?

--The school environment was lovely, everyone was so friendly and accommodating. Even the little break area was such a lovely place to meet people and chat.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--I really enjoyed all the teachers I had an felt like they would teach at a pace that best suited myself and my classmates. I also felt comfortable enough to commentate with them how I was feeling with the teaching pace.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teachers were all great. They were both able to judge just how much english to use and just how hard to push my. They were also great at balancing structured lessons with conversation.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Of course, when I move back to Hong Kong in the future I will need to take more lessons and I will definitely be coming back to Hong Kong Language School.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Yes, I have already recommend it to friends and family, because of how good, experience and well trained their teachers were, however friendly everyone was, and how economically priced their classes are.

Our teacher Kam was excellent

Shivanthi Kandiah-Evans from UK (the first lady on the left)

Cantonese Beginners Level 1 & 2 Day Time class (30/1- 24/2, 2012)

"I moved to Hong Kong recently and was looking for a Cantonese course to allow me to be more a part of life here. The Hong Kong Language School was recommended by a friend who did the intensive full-day Cantonese beginners course. I have now completed the first four weeks of the Basic Cantonese for Expatriates course. While it was a fairly intensive experience with lessons taking place each afternoon and some revision to be done each evening, I really enjoyed myself. I found the course content to be well thought through and the combination of taught classes, course book, written and spoken exercises and CD to be effective in helping me learn. Our teacher Kam was excellent. She introduced and explained vocabulary and concepts clearly and allowed plenty of time for us (there were three of us in our class) to practice and ask questions. In addition to covering the course material she responded to our many questions on vocabulary to deal with various situations. I plan to return later on this year to complete the remaining four weeks of this course. In the meantime I'm busy memorizing vocabulary and using my basic Cantonese as much as I can!!"

Mandarin Beginner 2 (7/5 – 20/5, 2014)

Lecturer in Psychology
Gregorian University, Rome, Italy
2002 - 2013

I chose the HKLS after a careful internet search and reading some student evaluations. What attracted me were the location of the school, flexibility of the course times, and the general environment of the school. The school is very well located for public transport in the Wan Chai district. I also made use of the public library (225 Hennessy Road) which was good for free Wi-Fi connection. Both Branda and Mini were helpful sources of information and were always a cheerful presence at the reception desk. I enrolled in Mandarin Beginners 2 for ten teaching days. Helen was an excellent teacher, challenging but also very encouraging. The progress I made, especially in spoken Mandarin, was more than I had hoped for. I was very impressed with her teaching techniques that helped me greatly in gaining greater competency and confidence in the language. I found the atmosphere of the school positive, professional, and focused. The course was good value for the price charged and I would certainly recommend others to study at HKLS.

The classes are good. The teachers are very fun, nice and knowledgeable

Ms. Nikki Lam from Vietnam

3,  How's the class atmosphere?

--The classes are good. The teachers are very fun, nice and knowledgeable.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teach Helen was VERY good. She sincerely cares for the well being of her students and genuinely want us to succeed and improve.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--If I can take more time off from work, I will definitely come back.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--Yes, because HKLS is an honest school who does what they say. HKLS is very helpful in helping students with their questions.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I really liked the flexibility in terms of class levels and timetable that the school offers.

2, How's the school environment?

-- The environment was very welcoming, friendly and professional.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- Great, I really enjoyed my lessons!

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- I thought my teacher was excellent, I really feel that my Mandarin has improved and the balance between spoken practice and grammar instruction was perfect.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Yes, I definitely intend to return. There are so many Chinese levels on offer and the flexibility of the timetable makes it a great choice. Above all, I really liked my teacher!

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Yes, I already have recommend Hong Kong Language School to various friends. The school provides a welcoming and unintimidating environment this is particularly important as Chinese can often be viewed as a very difficult language to learn but HKLS made it fun and enjoyable.

We were given plenty of opportunity to practice pronunciation and the chance to put together sentences

Kim Durna from Australia (the second lady on the right)

Cantonese Beginners Level 2 Day Time class (13/2- 24/2, 2012)

" I have previously completed a beginner course in Cantonese elsewhere, where I learned the Yale Romanization. I was keen to find another course that offered the same method, and was pleased to learn that HKLS did. I found out about HKLS on the internet - the website had a lot of information including course dates and prices. The school itself is in a convenient location, and is a pleasant environment. The class I was in had 3 students, which meant more teacher-student time per student. Kam was out teacher; she was excellent. She followed both the course outline, as well as being flexible enough to include extra things we asked for, and explained things very well - including word origins. We were given plenty of opportunity to practice pronunciation and the chance to put together sentences while getting constructive feedback. The course was well designed and develops in a logical way, the course booklets were also well developed. I was very happy with the course and teaching method.

I definitely will be doing more lessons as soon as I can arrange the time, as it is an excellent way to learn Cantonese. I would also recommend HKLS to anyone looking for a language school because it offers a variety of lesson structures (intense / part time / one-on-one), at very reasonable rates, and is a very good, attentive and friendly school.’

I had a great time and I'm gonna miss it a lot!

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I chose Hong Kong Language School because it was the first one that Google search brought me to. Since it was located in Wan Chi and convenient for me I decided to give it a try.

2, How’s the school environment?

--The school environment is very casual and friendly and the staff is very helpful at the front desk. They provide a hassle free and professional setting at the Hong Kong Language School.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--The class atmosphere is very straight forward and professional. It accommodates my needs as a student who needs intensive learning atmosphere.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teacher, Carol is an exceptional instructor on may levels. She has a superior understanding of the English language which is imperative for helping me learn. She understands that I work hard and on some days need to go slow, on days that I feel fresh she knows to push hard to get my maximal effort. I have learned more than I expected and have continued to come to class which I didn't know I would. Carol makes learning Mandarin fun and engaging with her refreshing and witty personality coupled with her immense skill as an instructor. Her professionalism is unmatched and can't be overstated.

5, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

--Because of the above reasons I recommend HKLS. I tell all my friends that they are fools if they don't come there to learn Mandarin. I consider Carol and HKLS the ultimate authority on the instruction of authentic mandarin speaking.

Mandarin Beginners – Lower Intermediate Full Day (3/9 – 21/12, 2012)
Mandarin Lower Intermediate – Upper Intermediate Full Day (4/2 – 10/7, 2013)

Sick and tired of business meetings in China, where you cannot directly communicate with your business partner? Learning Mandarin as a seasoned European manager, is it worth the efforts and can one speak after let me say one year of intense learning?
I have tried it. 10 months of private lessons every day at the Hong Kong Language School. Yes, Mandarin appeared to be more difficult than French or Spanish that I have learned in the past, but yes, one can learn that language! After 10 month I can express myself and the Chinese seem to have fun listening to me, and I do understand provided the Chinese follow my "please, speak slowly..."
I was very satisfied with the Hong Kong Language School. Not only do they have qualified teachers, but also understand different needs of individuals at different stages of the learning. One can "customize" the lessons with the school, and also directly with the teacher. They are flexible, even if you have to cancel a lesson at very short notice due to other business commitments. Friendly yes, qualified yes, even the coffee is ok. I can recommend the school to all who are serious to make an effort and want to dive into the most widely spoken language on this globe.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I have checked out various schools and also universities, but none of them could offer a flexible? time schedule for classes which met my schedule at reasonable costs.

2, How's the school environment?

-- The school is conveniently located just two minutes away from the bus station and a bit more than three minutes to walk by foot from the nearest subway. When entering the school, the first impression is very bright and friendly, which is partly also because of the friendly girls who are welcoming the visitors at the reception. The interior decoration is new and modern, with sufficient class rooms to care even for a bigger number of groups and individual students.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- Making the best out of the transition period between two companies, I have decided to take up with Chinese. After graduating the university more than 20 years ago, this is the first time that I can concentrate on finer things than just sales figures, market shares and financial statements. I really enjoy to step into the Language School every morning and to study together with people from different parts of the world like Italy Columbia, Japan, India ... We have a very open atmosphere during the lessons, mixed with many jokes, and also this helps to master the difficulties of the Chinese language.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- With a completely different linguistically background, I was quite concerned if I would be able to tackle a language like Chinese. But all teachers I have met at the Language School gave me confidence by their easily comprehensible way of teaching and their patience. Actually, my first intention was to acquire just some basic conversation skills. But now I became quite excited about my progress so that I am already planning to attend also the next higher course.

5, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Absolutely yes. Apart from the teaching qualities, I would recommend the Hong Kong Language School for its joyful atmosphere (and for the charming teachers ...). Everybody will immediately feel this friendly atmosphere by  simply giving a phone call to the Language School ...

My classes were very enjoyable and adapted to suit both my needs and abilities

I found the Hong Kong Language School after an internet search and luckily for me it turned out to be a very good school indeed! My classes were very enjoyable and adapted to suit both my needs and abilities. It made learning fun and didn't seem like work at all. There aren't many English-language tools available for Cantonese learners and having a good teacher is therefore essential in order to make progress.

I would not hesitate to recommend HKLS and look forward to continuing with studying Cantonese.

She took great interest in her students and I feel like a lot was accomplished in her class

Octavian Cheung from U.S.A.

Mandarin Upper Intermediate (4/7 – 13/12, 2011)
Cantonese Private Tuition (7/2 – 9/3, 2012)

I joined HKLS because I had just come to Hong Kong and was interested in improving my Mandarin for work. Unfortunately, because I work full time it makes joining a Mandarin program at a place like Hong Kong University really difficult because the hours are not flexible. So of course I had to find something that was more adaptable to my schedule and that would best fit me.

I had searched for a number of independent programs (HKLS being one of them) and had read the reviews that people had posted. I made a list of places and gave them a visit to see what they were all about.

When visiting HKLS for the first time it was somewhat intimidating because I thought, “Oh man, they are going to laugh at my mandarin”. However I had a different experience that definitely left a good impression.

The staff members were very informative and the teacher that gave me the assessment I found was very charismatic and funny. We had talked about my history and she and the rest of the faculty were able to gauge my level pretty well. Because of this encounter I was able to feel very comfortable, which was the kind of environment I wanted for my class.

After going to the other various schools on my list I unfortunately found that the experience wasn’t quite the same, so based off of that I decided the best choice by far was HKLS.

I was not disappointed.

The school environment was as I expected, very friendly and comfortable. I found it easy to talk with others who may not be in the same class as me or with the teachers of other classes.

The class environment was also nice. What was often the case would be people trying to make each other laugh with what we had learned or what we were learning. Overall it added to the experience and brought different people together.

I had asked to be with the teacher who had given me my assessment, and found she was a very methodical teacher and had a good sense of humor. She took great interest in her students and I feel like a lot was accomplished in her class. Personally I feel I learned what I expected (and a few things I didn’t expect).

I will come back to HKLS when possible. It is a great experience with great people and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning or brushing up on their Mandarin/Cantonese. If you like the laugh and learn, then you should try this school.

I never thought I would make such a progress within this short period of time

Mandarin Upper Intermediate 3 & 4 (9/4 – 7/5, 2013)
Mandarin Advanced 1 & 2 (23/5 – 20/6, 2013)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- First of all the location of the HK Language School is very convenient. I live on Kowloon side and could reach the language school easily by ferry. But there are many other ways to reach the school: subway, bus etc.

Secondly I met some teacher in person when I did the assessment test. Their person and professional competence convinced me that they are motivated and I could learn with and from them.

Finally I think the price for the language class is very reasonable . If you compare the price with other language schools in Hong Kong the one here is almost the cheapest and the classes small enough to learn as much as you want and as you yourself do for it.

2, How's the school environment?

-- The school environment is very nice. The school rooms are small but big enough to learn in a peaceful atmosphere. There is a tea corner where you can serve yourself with water, tea or coffee and there are even some snacks in case you get hungry before or after class. The other students are from different countries and you get easily in touch with them even if they are not your classmates because the size of the Language School allows it.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- At first I had private classes without classmates. Then one woman joined my class and we got along very easily. We had the same language level which I think was perfectly matched by the school. The class atmosphere was very good, we had good conversations in Mandarin and by learning from the other classmate's strenghts and weaknesses I could improve my own language skill.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- I was very satisfied with my teacher. She is a native Mandarin speaker so I could learn not only vocabulary and grammar but she also taught me much about China's history and culture. We constantly spoke Mandarin with each other so my Mandarin language skill noticeably improved within the months I took the language classes. Through the speaking practice I have now no more hesitation speaking with native Chinese people.

Actually my expectations were exceeded. I never thought I would make such a progress within this short period of time.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- If I would come back to Hong Kong I would take lessons again in the HK Language School. Besides the conversation class next time I would complement it with the reading and writing course.

The above mentioned shows that taking classes in the HK language school really paid of for me.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Yes of course, I will recommend the HK Language School. I was very satisfied and achieved what I intended to. The location is convenient, the school fee is very reasonable and the teachers and staff of the school are friendly and competent.

Overall, the class is effective and I was able to learn more than I have expected

Mr. Tony Ho from Hong Kong

Mandarin Private Tuition (28/6, 2010 -22/1, 2011)

1, How’s the school environment?

-- The school atmosphere is excellent. All coordinators and teachers are well organized and friendly. My class schedules are very flexible and I can cancel classes when I have other urgent matters.

2, How's the class atmosphere?

-- The class atmosphere is great. The classroom is noise-free and I can concentrate on listening to my teacher. Also, the room has sufficient space for my teacher to write on.

3, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- Ms. Liu is the best mandarin teacher that I have so far. She is native in mandarin and fluent in Cantonese and therefore, she knows the mistakes that Cantonese people usually make when speaking mandarin. She spent quite a bit of time to correct my grammatical and pronunciation errors. In addition, I was able to increase my vocabulary by learning new and useful words. Most importantly, she shared many of her experience and taught me about the culture of the Chinese people and the current environment in China. This has enabled me to gain further insight into the Chinese people and perhaps allow me to communicate with them more easily. Overall, the class is effective and I was able to learn more than I have expected. Even though it is very difficult for me to speak native-like mandarin, I strongly believe that I can survive in China without encountering big problems.

4, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

-- I will recommend Hong Kong Language School to my friends and relatives if they seek to increase their mandarin levels and culture awareness of the Chinese people. The teachers can easily adapt to the students’ needs and concentrate on correcting their weak areas.

The classes were professional yet relaxed

"I immigrated to HK from UK and I knew that if I was to successfully find a job and to truly experience HK, then learning Mandarin would be essential. After researching on the different language schools available, I chose Hong Kong Language School because of it's: flexibility, competitive costs, different range of courses and quality of teaching. The school lessons were tailored according to my requirements, as I had other daily commitments. The classes were professional yet relaxed and my classes were a mixture of one to one private teaching and with classmates. Both my teachers - Carol and Lily were experienced and made my lessons both extremely enjoyable and interesting and I was looking forward to going to my lessons everyday. After two months of daily lessons, I can hold a good level of conversation in Mandarin, as a result of the effective classes. My new Mandarin skills helped me to secure a job for one of the largest financial companies in Hong Kong, and if work commitments allow, I will definitely try to come back to take on additional lessons. I highly recommend the Hong Kong Language School as your Cantonese/Mandarin school, should you wish to learn either language for social or business".

She enjoyed her classes very much

David Lunsford from USA

Mandarin Beginners Level 1 & 2 Day Time class (6/10-2/11/2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- My wife took Mandarin classes at HKLS several months ago. She enjoyed her classes very much and the facilities are located nearby my office, making morning classes convenient. Based on her experience I didn't hesitate to enroll into a four week intensive course.

2, How's the school environment?

-- The Institute is located on a busy street corner in Wan Chai but, thankfully, street noise isn't heard within the building. It's only a few minutes walk to the nearest metro stop. The school is small but contains all the necessities that one needs to learn a language.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- My class consisted of only a handful of students. We were each from different countries, such as Panama, Japan and Switzerland. Based on differing ages and cultural backgrounds, each of us were learning Mandarin from different reference points but we got along well and had fun in class together.

4, How's your teacher?

-- All my classmates enjoyed our teacher. She was always well prepared for our lessons and kept us smiling as we all encountered challenges learning a new and difficult language.

5,Was your class effective?

-- Yes - my teacher made sure that everyone was learning a significant amount of Chinese and that no-one fell too far behind at any point. My teacher was obviously well-trained and very patient.

6, Did you learn what you had expected?

-- Yes - I am happy with the results of my lessons. I was taking beginner lessons and am of course still a beginner, but at least I can now recognize some words and characters whenever I hear mainland Chinese speak. I can also communicate in basic Mandarin when needed, which was my goal.

7,Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--I will certainly take more lessons at HKLS if my work agenda allows for it. It's a busy time of year for me right now so I've paused for the moment, but I'm looking into taking intensive course again in the springtime.

8, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Yes, of course. It is easy to end up in disappointing language classes (I speak from experience). Since mine and my wife's experience at HKLS has been satisfying, there is good reason to continue to recommend the school to our friends and colleagues. HKLS has a very good formula for success: convenient location, well-trained teachers, and fair prices.

My teacher was superb and was sensitive to my ability to absorb the material and paced the class accordingly

Gary Sciscent from U.S.A (the gentleman on the right)

Survival Cantonese (4/2 – 6/2, 2013)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I took a crash course in Cantonese (Survival Cantonese) but I was already familiar with HKLS because my daughters had taken a Mandarin class at the school one summer. In both cases, the school was able to offer customized language classes with a professional language teacher on very short notice.

2, How's the school environment?

-- The school is in a full-service business district easily accessible by the subway.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- The classroom and office space are clean and brightly lit. My classes began promptly and there were periodic short rest breaks.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- My teacher was superb and was sensitive to my ability to absorb the material and paced the class accordingly. I was interested in learning some introductory Cantonese, and this course was perfect for me. My class focused on everyday dialogue and useful expressions and we used the school's in-house developed handbook and cd that I still refer to when I self-study at home.

Of course learning, especially language learning, requires a good measure of individual effort and study time outside of the classroom. I needed a teacher to provide leadership and to help me navigate the course but in fact a fair amount of progress in my case depended on doing my homework and preparing for class every day.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Yes, I will take more classes in Cantonese - it's hard to stop once you start.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- I would advise anyone learning a language to look for a school that is easily accessible and has well-qualified instructors who understand your goals and can help you design a realistic language program. In both cases, HKLS met those criteria and I had a successful learning experience.

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

I found Hong Kong Language School in the internet when looking for a language course fitting my very tight time schedule. The information was clearly provided and the price for a four weeks course appeared to me quite reasonable in comparison with other offers. Additionally my enquiries about enrolment and payment conditions were answered promptly and in a very friendly manner.

2, How's the school environment?

There is nothing to complain about. It is easily accessible and nicely located.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

The atmosphere in class was perfect. With only one classmate the courses were very intensive. Additionally, I was very happy with the choice of my classmate; we had a lot of fun together in class and found a lot of things to talk about and to discuss. I also had the impression that our two teachers were very well chosen for our interests and our personalities.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

The two teachers we had were perfect, each in her particular way. It was very good to have two different teachers who are both native speakers of Mandarin but come from different areas and have different accents, which forced us to adapt to both of them instead of getting used to just one. Additionally, their respective idiolects and their focus in class were slightly different, partly due to age, partly due to differences in interest. I did not expect to learn so much about different aspects of modern Chinese culture, different ways of life in Hong Kong and Mainland China from two so well informed, nice and open-minded people. We had very lively discussions about many topics of the day, but also about general questions of life in China and in Europe. And we also had a lot of fun together. Carol always prepared some funny games for us, which forced me to talk, and this was exactly what I expected from the course. Additionally she opened conversations about a lot of important practical topics, such as computers, software, mobile phones, etc. and in this way provided us with a lot of relevant vocabulary for everyday purposes. With Lily we had a lot of interesting and well informed discussions about both Ancient and Modern Chinese history which I enjoyed very much. It was always great with both of them. I was never bored even for a minute and I would have liked to continue for another month or two. Already during, and particularly after the course I felt much more confident with my Chinese colleagues, I understand them a lot better now and I am less reluctant to join in a Chinese conversation than I was before.

Thanks a lot again to both of you, Lily and Carol. I really miss our discussions.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

If I ever have the occasion I will definitely come back for another course like the one I had. I learned Modern Chinese mostly on my own, and although I went to some evening classes before, this course was the first that really suited me and my particular interests. It was very good for me to have the opportunity to speak Chinese in an environment that provided normal conversational situations and discussions on everyday topics and did not just follow the (mostly not very interesting) topics in an exercise book. Both teachers always reacted to every question and topic we raised and provided the relevant vocabulary, etc.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

Certainly for all the above reasons. If all teachers are like Lily and Carol, nothing can go wrong.

It was a great experience

Katarzyna Urbaniak from Poland (the second lady from the left)

Mandarin Upper Intermediate to Advanced Full Day Class (5/9 – 12/10, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- While looking at school’s website I have discovered that lessons schedule is very flexible. You can start class anytime you want and finish any time you want. It was a very important factor for me. The school would adapt to your preference. It is very convenient. I also appreciate the contact with the reception. I have received a full clear information and advice on classes, materials and methods.

2, How's the school environment?

-- I loved the school environment. Teachers are very friendly and open-minded. Girls at the reception desk are very helpful and nice. Even school’s space is very well designed for socializing. During breaks everyone from different class and levels can gather together and socialize.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- I consider myself very lucky. My class consisted of really nice people and I have made great friendships. We studied and we laughed together. It was a great experience.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- At the beginning I didn’t understand the very well the teacher’s method. However, after a week I have discovered that the class was really effective because I could actually communicate well in Mandarin. After a month of class, not only I wasn’t afraid to speak anymore but also I have gained an adequate amount of Chinese vocabulary and fixed phrases. I had highly qualified teacher. The teaching methods and tips the teacher gave us were really useful and made studying a foreign language easier and pleasant.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- I am thinking of coming back. HKLS is the first thing I would spend my money on if I stay longer in Hong Kong. I believe it is both a good investment in your language skills and a fun experience with great people.

(Came Back to us and took 2 more weeks - Mandarin Advanced (27/11- 3/11, 2011)

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Of course I will recommend HKLS to my friends. No matter they work or study they can always find a class schedule adequate to their needs. You can meet great teachers with outstanding teaching skills and meet new friends. It’s worth be a part of the school!

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- a friend recommended me the school.

2, How's the school environment?

-- comfortable and convenient

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- serious and friendly so a good balance.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- Lily Liu is my teacher, she is very smart, very cultured and open mind so it's very comfortable to learn with her.

4 personnes and after only me. i improve my understanding and talking, that what i was expected. (however, i think for the beginning is good to be with other students but after, in upper levels, is better to be alone for the lesson. Because all students don't improve at the same steps, some are good to understand or some are good to speak)

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Yes i will come back. i will come back because i like the way to teach and i also like my teacher!!

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Yes i will recommended this school because there is a nice mood (friendly), i had a good teacher and i enjoy go to this school.

I can confidently say that the instructors at HKLS are by far the best I've ever worked with

Subject: hi!

Hi folks! I just wanted to let you all know that I started volunteering this week with a union here in San Francisco. I'm helping them outreach to Chinese workers. The Union lost their Cantonese speaking staff person almost a year ago and they haven't been able to find a replacement. So I have been talking with the workers and yesterday i helped translate at a meeting. The meeting was conducted in Spanish English and Cantonese.

It was all really difficult for me, but the workers were really happy to have someone who could speak some Cantonese and they understood most of what I was saying. I also understood most of what they were saying.

I was so excited to finally see my hard work starting to pay off. I still have a lot to learn, but I think if am working on a daily basis with Chinese workers I'll learn quickly.

I'm also glad now that I chose Cantonese instead of Mandarin. Some of the workers that I spoke with told me they can understand Mandarin but can't speak it. But everyone spoke and understood Cantonese.

Thanks for all your support and training. I am definitely putting it to good use!

Sanjay

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I chose HKLS because I wanted to have an immersion experience that was fun but also challenging at the same time. The method of teaching seemed both rigorous and engaging. Furthermore, HKLS is one of the few language schools that also sets up a homestay with a Hong Kong family. I thought this would allow me to get the most out of my short time studying Cantonese in Hong Kong.

2, How's the school environment?

-- Free coffee, tea, and biscuits along with cozy, air conditioned classrooms - what more can one want?

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- The class atmosphere is pretty casual. I sometimes didn't even realize that I was learning because we would become engrossed in trying to communicate about a variety of topics. Only after class would end would I realize how much I learned.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- I had two different teachers, both of whom were extremely talented and effective. I've had several Cantonese teachers in the past and I can confidently say that the instructors at HKLS are by far the best I've ever worked with. They have the experience to explain grammar and concepts in ways that non-native speakers can understand. The teachers also teach a great deal about Chinese culture and thinking. All this is done in a conversational and fun way.

I enjoyed how rigorous the class was. Of course the instructor adjusts to the level of the class, but at the same time is always pushing students forward. I definitely got the experience that I wanted and felt that with the HKLS instructors I was able to learn very quickly.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Yes! I plan to come back and take more lessons. I am so excited to be able to have conversation in Cantonese, but I know that if I want to perfect my Cantonese I need to come back and learn.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Yes. I talk to a number of my friends about how great HKLS is. The teachers make HKLS the best. Attending classes at HKLS really made me realize how important it is to have experienced teachers.

They had many different time options to choose from and their staff was very friendly

Mr. Raymond Chan from U.S.A.

Cantonese Beginners Day Time class (25/11- 23/12, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--I chose Hong Kong Language School because they were very flexible.? They had many different time options to choose from and their staff was very friendly.? Also, the facility looked very presentable and the location is quite close to the MTR.

2, How’s the school environment?

--The school’s environment is quite good. There is always a friendly and helpful atmosphere. The school itself feels very “open” and you never feel trapped or cluttered.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

--The classrooms are comfortable and clean.? Students are encouraged to ask questions and the teachers always make sure that the students are able to comprehend the material.? You never feel rushed to learn the material.? If there is something is confusing or hard to learn, the teacher slows down and tries to help the students first.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teacher, Angela, was awesome.? She was very friendly and knowledgeable.? My class was quite effective.? Due to the fact that Angela is flexible, I had learned more than I had expected.?? She was not one of those teachers that only follows the book like a robot.? If there are other things that she feels a student should know, she deviates from the book and teaches her students very useful words/phrases/ sentences.? Also if a student wanted to learn about subjects that were not covered in the course, she would also take time to teach/ explain them.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Of course!? Before choosing Hong Kong Language School, I had called/ visited many other schools around Hong Kong.? Hong Kong Language School was the most flexible.? They always try to work the time schedule around the student, making it convenient.? Besides convenience, the staff is always friendly and welcoming.? Lastly, Hong Kong Language School’s price is quite reasonable compared to others.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--Yes, I would recommend Hong Kong Language School to my friends.? Due to its convenient location, it is easy to get to.? The staff is very friendly and you are never looked down upon.? The material is designed to make learning Chinese easier and due to their flexibility, you can always learn at your own pace.

Learned a lot in each lesson and laughed a lot while doing so

Financial Analyst, Assistant Vice President -- Credit Suisse
External Reporting and Financial Publications

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I found the school by chance (or rather luck) in the HK weekly (free) newspaper

-- I think this is a newspaper geared towards expats.  The school was the 1st one that I rang, but I immediately liked how friendly and accommodating the staff was.  I think it was good that they advised me to meet them first before deciding and letting them assess my needs.  They were never pushy (as we know Chinese can be!).  Price was fair, but not the main determinant of my decision making process.

2, How's the school environment?

-- Rooms and communal space were very comfortable and relaxed.  Loved the free drinks and snacks -- which helped keep the energy levels up during 3 - 4 hour private lessons!  Air conditioning was a bit troublesome at times in terms of noise level and finding a comfortable level...my teacher had to keep adjusting it!  Convenient location near MTR.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- Structured, but fun and relaxed. Good environment for learning. Learned a lot in each lesson and laughed a lot while doing so.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- Loved my teacher. She was professional and fun.  Flexible enough to gauge lessons around personal interests, yet also stayed structured.  I appreciated her discipline with my pronunciation and thorough explanations of proper vs colloquial Cantonese -  and made sure I learned the correct way 1st! I had private lessons so I was better able to personalize the lessons around my needs. My teacher was very good at taking interest in what I liked and tried to develop my vocabulary and speaking / comprehension needs to cater to those type of situations.  I liked her practical approach to what a person should learn.

I think we could have worked more on comprehension since this is a weak area for me.  I seemed to be able to speak, but often misunderstood what was being said to me when being asked or s/he responded.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Yes, because I felt my teacher knows me well enough to understand my needs and will continue to push me, while still encouraging me and keeping things fun and practical.  I appreciated how flexible / accommodating the staff were to ensure that I could fit in my lessons everyday.  Staff are motivated to teach and considerate to their students.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- I think it is difficult to say that each person will have as positive experience as I did since I had the luxury of having private lessons and also a very good relationship with my teacher.  I would definitely recommend my teacher, but as she is a representative of the school, I would feel more than comfortable to recommend the school itself to my colleagues.

I'd say it was "learning with a smile

Ms Jennifer Hennings from U.S.A.

Cantonese Beginners Day Time class (24/11- 21/12, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I chose HKLS because it had so many positive student reviews on its website, and because it was offering Cantonese classes at a time that worked well for me. I also thought the price was reasonable compared to other programs I'd seen.

2, How’s the school environment?

-- HKLS is a friendly place. I like the way that students can have tea and snacks together and chat during the break. It makes it much more social.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- The class atmosphere is friendly without being overly lax. I'd say it was "learning with a smile."

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- Vectra is a thoughtful and encouraging teacher. He did a good job of identifying and focusing on words and phrases that were most challenging for me. He also used a good variety of exercises to help me practice. I really feel like I've learned a lot in my four weeks of lessons. The class was quite effective.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- If my schedule allows, I will definitely come back for more lessons, since I like the pace, structure, and price of the HKLS classes.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Yes, I've already recommended HKLS to several people, and I'll continue to do so. I think the classes are a great value for the money, and the teachers are friendly, knowledgeable, and professional.

I found her classes a lot of fun and intellectually stimulating

Vriti Manaktala from India (the 2nd lady on the left)

Mandarin Beginners Level 2 (17/9 – 28/9, 2012)
Mandarin Beginners Level 3 - Lower Intermediate 3 (8/10 – 17/12, 2012)
Mandarin Lower Intermediate 4 - Upper Intermediate 1 (14/1 – 4/2, 2013)

Came back & continued from Mandarin Upper Intermediate 2 on 21st February, 2013

The school has a very lively and enjoyable atmosphere and far exceeded my expectations. I met some very nice people and made good friends on the course.

My teacher Helen was excellent. I have never had such a wonderful and encouraging teacher. I found her classes a lot of fun and intellectually stimulating. Helen is fully of positive energy and so I looked forward to going to class everyday. I will miss learning Mandarin from Helen and hope I may have the opportunity to pursue some more sessions at the school with her.

My special thanks to Branda and Mini for organising the classes so professionally.

All the best.

The class environment was extremely fun

Mariyah Hoosenally from Singapore

Cantonese Beginners Level 1 Day Time class (8/8 – 19/8, 2011)

Neih hou! The two weeks I spent in the Hong Kong Language School were weeks I would never forget. I chose the Hong Kong Language School amongst the few others in Hong Kong because it stood out to me. The class timings were reasonable, the location was perfect and the course outline was just right. I felt that the school was just right for me the moment I walked in and was welcomed by the friendly staff. I was introduced to my fellow classmates and teachers shortly after and knew that this was right for me.

The class environment was extremely fun! I am now confident walking down the streets of Hong Kong. I would to take more classes to expand my Cantonese and talk to the locals. I recommend the HK Language School to anyone who wants to learn the languages of Hong Kong!

"I took Cantonese Beginners 1&2 courses together with 16 of my colleaguesfrom Ms. Branda Kwong of Hong Kong Language School. This was an effective and appreciable learning experience. Ms. Kwong taught us basic conversation, vocabulary, sentence making, pronunciation, etc. with dedication andenthusiasm. She also shared her pleasant attitude, positive thinking ,traditional Chinese value, and some precious life experience with us. We enjoyed attending Ms. Kwong's classes and learned a lot from her. I highly recommend these courses and related ones to those who are interested inlearning Cantonese."

My teacher was simply great

Mr. Alex Howard from Britain, Swiss

Mandarin Private Tuition (28/9- 29/10, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- Because it was very convenient. Close to my house and very central relative to Wanchai. It came across as professional to me and the prices were very fair. Upon the visit I felt very welcome and at ease. At that point I had already made up my mind.
2, How's the school environment?

-- Actually quite family like. After a month's time I felt really familiar with the place and everyone. It really had a cosy feel. Saying goodbye to my teacher at the end was rather difficult, a relationship had been building up with the school and the place.
3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- I only took private lessons with Helen, so it was of course very personalized. It was more of a dialogue than a class. It was very casual but yet very effective and hard-working. From my point of view it really was ideal, especially to learn to express myself.
4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- My teacher was simply great. She taught me everything from Chinese history, to everyday culture, vocabulary, characters and grammar. She was my first real insight into China I must say. Within 5 weeks time I learned all the basics of the Chinese language. As I now moved to Shanghai I could easily get around, communicate and even explain what kind of phone deal I wanted to my mobile company!
5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Of course! If I ever was to move back to Hong Kong from Shanghai (where I know live), I'd probably take a weekly 2-hour course just to maintain my characters and vocabulary.
6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- Of course! I indeed already have. In my own opinion HKLS is the best deal you can find in Hong Kong. Their strongest point is their outstanding flexibility.

So don't be shy, go knock at their door.

The structure of the student materials was clear and well laid-out

Peter Beer from Australia (the gentleman on the left) & Ling Fang from Beijing (the lady on the right)

Cantonese Private Tuition (20/9,2011 – 24/10, 2012, 84 hours in total)

1. Content

‧ The structure of the student materials was clear and well laid-out. The New Words and Conversations etc sections all worked well to reinforce the vocabulary and subject matter

‧ The content flowed well, from simple everyday topics and vocabulary initially to more sophisticated topics as we moved into the intermediate stage.

2. Teacher

‧ Our teacher, Kaman, was very patient! It was sometimes difficult keeping the class on-track, as one of the students (my wife ) had a habit of leading the conversation off heading on tangents.... But we managed to cover all the relevant content each class

‧ I liked Kaman’s approach of writing relevant words etc onto the white (glass) boards. That helped reinforce various concepts and vocab groups also

3. Organization

‧ Time worked well – I needed a flexible structure because of my travel and it was no problem to do fewer classes a week or cancel if really necessary (giving enough notice)

‧ Communication with the management worked well via email. Very prompt and clear responses

4. Results

‧ We started at Beginners level, and after one year we had reached “Upper Intermediate” (Lesson 64). It helped that my wife is Chinese (but only speaks Mandarin), and I can speak reasonable Mandarin also, but still we made very good progress

‧ My vocabulary is now 500+ words (perhaps closer to 1000), and I can have a conversation (relatively simple), and even though my wife did not revise much each week, she can now understand a lot of Cantonese on TV or when communicating with local Cantonese speakers – so together we are in good shape!

So overall our experience was very positive, and we got lots of benefit from attending Hong Kong Language School. We might even come back for a refresher course at some stage in the future! And we will take Kaman out for dinner sometime soon too!!

They are always helpful and attentive

Mandarin Upper Intermediate Evening class (1/3, 2012 – Present )

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

I decided to join HK Language School for various reasons.

First, they offered classes at various levels, including mine. It is not uncommon in language schools to have only either basic or advanced levels, with intermediate students left literally, "in the middle". This was not the case, and I was immediately placed in a group adequate to my level.

The school is very conveniently located, with easy access by bus or MTR. The staff was very friendly and helpful when we enquired about the courses and they have a good schedule flexibility. The final (and not least important) reason was cost. Compared to other options, HK Language school is very budget friendly, which added to all the other advantages it has, made my decision to join very easy!

2, How's the school environment?

Once I joined, I felt immediately welcomed. The school environment is indeed friendly, which confirmed my initial impression. They have a good supply of coffee, water and snacks for the students, they are always helpful and attentive, and the teachers are all very friendly. I can confidently say that in a very short time I made a few actual friends, which, as an expat living in a place very far away from home is important and not too easy.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

Definitely going to class and continue learning that you want to do, not simply something you need to do. Learning must be interesting and fun, and in HK Language School they definitely succeed.

Classes are generally made up of 3-4 students, which makes it great for learning. Depending on your level that might be even smaller.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

Unlike other places, teachers actually prepare their classes according to each individual's needs. This is priceless. The teachers actually like what they do, and they care about their students. And it shows. They promote learning the language while being as friendly as possible, within the boundaries of good teacher-student dynamics. This is good because after all, we go there to learn. If friendships are created, there is always time for fun after class.

Since I joined I've had two teachers, both being excellent. As I said, they enjoy teaching and sincerely seek that students learn. They understand mandarin is not an easy language to learn, and they are very patient and dedicated. It is very important that they are from Mainland China, not only because of the accent and pronunciation, but also for idiomatic expressions and way of speaking.

My classes have been very effective. I feel I have improved substantially since coming here, and people around me with whom I communicate in mandarin think likewise.

5. Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

I strongly recommend people to come and try learning in the HK Language School, it will be very rewarding!

Very relaxed and yet at a high level

Shirley Wong from Netherlands (the lady on the right)

Mandarin Upper Intermediate Full Day Class (18/7 – 29/7, 2011)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

Recommended by relative...

2, How's the school environment?

Easy to find, lots of public transport in the neighborhood...

3, How's the class atmosphere?

Good, very relaxed and yet at a high level...since there was only two students (including myself) in that group, we had enough opportunity to practice a lot.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

Carol is a wonderful teacher. She kept the level high and was very flexible. Besides the book contents she also explained other Chinese terms, the meaning and where the expression came from. Also the conversations were very helpful for me to use Mandarin to make sentences. Since THE class was small, we had THE opportunity to practice a lot, so yes I did learn a lot. My main purpose was to get more acquainted with Mandarin Conversation/vocabulary. And I think this was a good start to begin with...

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

Hopefully I get THE chance to!

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

Certainly, cos I experienced it to be a good institution....

Recommend HKLS as an excellent school to learn Chinese in a professional and friendly manner

Jack from Britain & Femke from Netherlands

Mandarin Beginners Day Time class (5/7 -14/10, 2010)

" I would recommend HKLS as an excellent school to learn Chinese in a professional and friendly manner that result in a great learning environment. The teaching quality meet all my high expectations and I particularly liked it that the classes focused on developing my speaking ability for everyday situations. I would recommend HKLS for anyone who is serious about taking the plunge of learning mandarin!"

I actually learned MORE than what I expected

Christine M. Vets from Belgium (the lady in the middle)

Mandarin Beginners Level 3 & 4 (16/7 – 27/7, 2012)

Mandarin Lower Intermediate Level 1 & 2 (13/11 – 23/11, 2012)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- I am Belgian, I have been learning Mandarin in Luxembourg for two years.
Our teacher is really good. Unfortunately, she has to teach over 23 people.
She teaches us how to read and write traditional Chinese characters. We roughly know how to read around 500 characters.
Unfortunately, we only have very limited opportunities to speak Mandarin simply because we are far too many people.
I failed at the TOCFL level 1 back in May. The written part was a piece of cake but the listening comprehension part was really hard.
This is how I realised I badly needed to take intensive classes in China. Hong Kong was on my short list because I did not need a visa.
I googled 'learn Mandarin in Hong Kong' and Hong Kong Language School popped up.
It had good reviews, very competitive prices, therefore, I picked it up.
I contacted the school. Mini and Branda turned out to be very professional and very effective.
All my questions were answered within minutes. I sent my application and here I am!

2. How's the school environment?

-- I loved Wan Chai. The school is very close to the MTR (subway). It takes less than five minutes to walk from the MTR station (exit C) to HK Language School. There are lots of very good and really affordable restaurants around the school.
This gave me the opportunity to try food from all over Asia in just a couple of weeks.
This would have been impossible in Belgian!

Branda (senior course co-ordinator and one of the Cantonese teachers), was actually nice enough to recommend a few.
One day, she accompanied me to a Thai place during her lunch break.
She also took me to a fantastic Sichuan place in Kowloon on a Friday evening.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- Very good atmosphere, very studious!
I took private classes only. Helen and I worked very hard as I only had two weeks.

I was looking forward to my afternoon class as I could see my Mandarin was getting better and better every day!

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- Helen is a great teacher. Mandarin is not exactly the first foreign language I learn and I can tell the difference between
a nice and motivated teacher and a bad one. Helen is definitely one of the top ones! Also, she speaks really good English.

I actually learned MORE than what I expected. Within only two weeks, I managed to learn enough vocabulary and sentence structures to be able to communicate in Mandarin. It would not have been possible without Helen. She helped me to work on my weaknesses, she made flash cards for me and
she gave me extra homework so that I could really make the most of these two weeks.

Helen is very modest about her achievements. I can tell you that if you are lucky enough to learn Mandarin from scratch with a teacher like her,

you will be fluent within a couple of months!

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Yes, I will as soon as I can take extra vacation.
I want to come back and take more classes with Helen simply because I know that I will learn a lot.

I reckon that if I come to Hong Kong for two weeks for the next three years, I will be fluent.

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

-- I already did. Not only to friends but also to people I met in Hong Kong.

I did because I know your school is a very good one.

The classes were both very effective and gave me a good start into learning Mandarin

Lee Pechtl from Germany

Mandarin Beginner Level 1 & 2, Mandarin Reading & Writing Course (12/11, 2009 – 8/2, 2010)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

-- Compared to other language schools, I found the website to be well-arranged and easy to understand. I thought the course fees were reasonable for Hong Kong and made use of the discount offer for early payment. The location of the school was also very important to me: it is very central.

2, How's the school environment?

-- The environment was very pleasant: clean (as was the rest of the building), the receptionists were very friendly, and there was always free tea, coffee, and little snacks for everyone in the entrance/leisure area. With the school being on one of the upper floors, the rooms are quite light. The outside environment, too, is very convenient, with lots of small places to have lunch at, a mall to have coffee down the road, and MTR as well as tram stops within a few minutes' walking distance.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- The first course I took was for learning and practising speaking: my 4 other classmates were from places all over the world and we soon started meeting for lunch, etc. Altogether, the atmosphere was very friendly and also interesting as there was a noticable cultural exchange as well.

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- The teacher of the first course I attended tried to respond to everone's particular needs, and was very attentive to help with individual difficulties (pronunciation, etc.) In the second course I took, I was on my own, to learn and practise writing characters. The teacher encouraged me a lot and contributed to?my lasting enthusiasm for Mandarin. The classes were both very effective and gave me a good start into learning Mandarin (I still take lessons now back in Europe).

5, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends?

-- I will recommend HKLS to anyone who wants to study Chinese in Hong Kong. For all the above reasons ;-)

The schedule was also very flexible which was helpful

Jonathan Chan from U.S.A. (the gentleman on the left)

Cantonese Upper Intermediate to Advanced level (25/6 – 25/7, 2012)

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

I was recommended to come to Hong Kong Language School by my relatives in Hong Kong. I'm unsure as to how they came across your school.

2. How's the school environment?

The school environment was very comfortable and I enjoyed being able to have some free tea or coffee in the morning. And in order to catch the express bus I needed to arrive rather early, but I felt that the school environment was comfortable enough for me to come 1/2 an hour early and just sit and study in the waiting area.

3. How's the class atmosphere?

The class environment in my situation I believe was different from most cases. I didn't have any other classmates, but my teacher was friendly and made the one on one class situation comfortable. The schedule was also very flexible which was helpful since during my trip to HK I needed to have some mornings to do other things. The ease of rescheduling was very nice and would not have been able to do certain things during my short stay in HK if otherwise.

4. How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

My teacher was very good--Although our lessons followed the book's structure, she was open to answering any of my questions that I had regarding Hong Kong life. During my stay in Hong Kong I came across things that I didn't understand and things that my relative's generation were unable to answer, but she was always willing to give thorough explanations. Even when she could not, she came in the following class with the answer which I really appreciated. She also gave me a list of common/popular dim sum foods and how to say/write them which became helpful to look at throughout the month as well. I learned a lot from this class and now I have many people back in America telling me how much my Cantonese has improved, so I think that it was indeed helpful.

5. Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

I was halfway through Advanced 2 when I left and so there would be only 2 more books left for me if I returned. Traveling to Hong Kong is also very expensive, but given that if money isn't an issue I think that another month to finish Advanced 3 and 4 would be beneficial.

6. Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

If my friends had the opportunity to go back to Hong Kong and wanted to take Chinese classes, yes, of course I would recommend HKLS to them. Everyone was very friendly every morning and classes were very productive and enjoyable.

Overall this was a very good experience that I'm glad to have had and a very beneficial class that I learned much from.
Thank you very much for all your time and help you've given me the past month!

I learnt so much more than expected!

-- A friend highly recommended it to me!

2, How’s the school environment?

-- Really friendly and a lovely place to spend time in and meet people! The staff are really friendly and accommodating and also help you to practice your Cantonese.

3, How's the class atmosphere?

-- Really relaxed, friendly, flexible and fun! Thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience!

4, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

-- I learnt so much more than expected! I couldn't believe what they fitted into two weeks! The class material was so comprehensive, but the teacher also very flexible and any extra phrases we wanted to learn she would teach us.

5, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

-- Definitely, once I've consolidated what I've learnt! When I've used it out and about it's been great and just made me want to learn more!

6, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends & relatives? Why?

-- Definitely, I think it uses very comprehensive material as guidance but is also very flexible! It's also a really friendly, flexible and accommodating school!

1, Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

--My company highly recommended it and I have not been disappointed!

2, How's the class atmosphere?

--Ours was a really great interactive and fun atmosphere but always emphasized language skills.

3, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--Myself and the three other colleagues/students loved our instructor Branda Kwong. She was so personable, persistent, encouraging, and enthusiastic. We also threw a lot of non syllabus related inquires which she always entertained with great humor and insight. The class was very effective as were able to interact and get by in daily Hong Kong life better.

4, Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

--Sure, I would love to time permitting. It’s not only fun, but a great way to get to know Hong Kong more intimately.

5, Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

--I would recommend it to those who are serious about Cantonese but also to those who want a more casual, colloquial understanding of the language. Cantonese seems very special in that there is a lot of slang and local intricacies and I think the Hong Kong Language School captures that in its practice and teaching methods.

3, How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

--My teacher is great, she has very good teaching skills, her explanations are always clear, she points out the most important and interesting aspects of language, which helps to concentrate and understand Chinese language better. She also gives the cultural background, which is very important when learning a language. The atmosphere of class was relaxed yet productive. I have learnt what I expected - I wanted to develop my speaking and listening skills, and I think I've achieved that.

Thank you for all your support and encouragement, you've given me the confidence to learn a new language and I know this will be a life long journey because the Chinese language is so rich in culture I don't think any outsider would be able to fully grasp it in one seating.

Thank you to all the teachers that helped me and were patient with me as I struggled to organize my thoughts more coherently and though at times it was painful to try to express myself with the limited words that I knew, their support and encouragement made it much easier for me to trust in their wisdom and experience that I would one day be able to communicate my thoughts better.

I'm amazed by how much I've learnt in the span of a little over 4 months. This is truly evidence that your centre is the best in hong kong and your teachers, professionals.

Thank you again and I hope if time allows I can pursue learning this beautiful language further.

That is the best way to take on the challenge of learning a new learning

Mandarin Beginners Full Day class (13/2- 24/2, 2012)

1. Why did you choose Hong Kong Language School?

I am based in Singapore for more than 6 months and I was in between changing jobs. So I had plenty of time to improve my Mandarin. Anyway, the reason why I chose Hong Kong Language School is because it was initially recommended to me by a friend of mine who came to study Mandarin. Secondly, the school made the best initial impression in terms of corresponding via email in a friendly and efficient manner. I checked various schools online as well. However, I was most satisfied with the price-performance ratio of Hong Kong Language School and they were very flexible to meet individual expectations. The staff was very accommodating at all times.

2. How's the school environment?

The Rooms and the communal area are spacious and comfortable. I also like the fact that free drinks are provided. That’s a great idea. You can have a chat with other students and keep up the energy level in between lessons, especially when studying 4-5 hours every day. Aside from that, the location of the school is excellent. It is right located in WanChai. You can witness the hustle and bustle during your lunch break.

3. How's the class atmosphere?

The environment for learning is excellent. I learned a lot during the lessons and we had a great laugh while doing so. That’s the best way to take on the challenge of learning a new learning.

4. How's your teacher? Was your class effective? Did you learn what you had expected?

My teacher Helen was fun and professional. She was able to incorporate personal interests into the lessons. I am working in hotels and on my last day she handed me a list of useful phrases that I can use at work. I’m using it now on a regular basis. Overall, I loved it. The learning experience during my 2 weeks was throughout positive.

5. Will you come back & take more lessons? Why?

Yes, I’ll definitely come back and take more lessons. My teacher was able to adjust easily to my individual linguistic needs, as well as encourage me. I have learnt a lot during 2 weeks and by the time I l left I realized instantly that I want to go back as soon as I can. I got used to the daily learning routine and it made me more determined to further my mandarin studies in the near future. Generally, learning Mandarin at the Hong Kong Language School was a lot of fun and beneficial. The staff is very considerate to their students.

6. Will you recommend Hong Kong Language School to your friends? Why?

The school was initially recommended to me by a good friend of mine who came to study Mandarin. I’ll definitely highly recommend it and hopefully my word-of-mouth advertising will lead to more people studying at HKLS. You guys are awesome J.
