Small classes, high quality of instruction with their own materials, and the teachers really put in a great effort. It’s a great place to start learning Cantonese or continue learning more and more. They are also quite flexible to accommodate students with different backgrounds (e.g. if you learned Mandarin before or want to learn some characters).

I took Cantonese classes from this school with Branda, and was amazed at her skills to teach in a lively and very interactive way. She was never short of pertinent and tailored explanations that helped me grasp and memorize the concepts of the language so foreign to my own way of thinking about language, being French and 60+ years old! She could bring me to love that language. Which is the most important motivational key to language acquisition, and always so encouraging, which is the second most important key. I’m able now to chat on everyday life topics, as long as people speak “maahn maahn”! 😀 merci beaucoup!

I’ve been learning here for a few months and I’m enjoying it fully. The teachers here are patient and engaging. While each lesson does have a theme/ particular set of vocab it covers, they frequently branch out to make the lesson more applicable to daily life. They explain the origin of the word as well as related words and other uses in phrases too which makes it much more interesting than just running through a list of words and has given me a better understanding of how the Cantonese language works.
They provide a text book that has vocabulary, practice scenarios and conversations. As well as audio files to accompany the text that are especially useful when practicing and attempting to learn pronunciation and tones. While not all the content may be relevant, it is a good base to build upon and consult while studying.
The earlier comment regarding frequent messages from the class coordinator confused me, as I find her messages helpful reminders and appreciate her willingness to accommodate my schedule when figuring out class times. The flexibility to change times and take a break between sessions is another thing I like about this language center, and I am excited about the progress I’ve made with the language thus far.

Cantonese Beginners Evening Course (7/6/2022 – 7/7/2022)
I recently moved to Hong Kong and joined HKLS on a friend’s recommendation, to learn Cantonese. When i was signing up for the course, I had little hope of ever being able to pick up Cantonese because I had heard that it is a very difficult language. But HKLS proves that wrong!! The course materials, teachers and structure of the course at HKLS was excellent! Not only did I start picking up Cantonese, I had a lot of fun along the way. The classes were fun, so were the interactions with the teacher and the classmates. The school even has a cute little spot for coffee and snacks, where people from all classes come out to chill during breaks! The people at HKLS are polite and responsive (they even sent me a reminder in the mornings on days when I had a class). In short, my experience at HKLS was phenomenal and I am so grateful to them for giving me such a fun-filled learning experience! Highly recommended!!

I’m learning Cantonese at the HKLS and I’m very happy with the language school. They’re very flexible and always try to arrange class times around my work schedule. My teacher works with me at my pace but also challenges me to keep me pushing forward. In 9 months of lessons I’ve made significant progress from zero Cantonese knowledge. Highly recommend.

Have been coming here for about a year. I really enjoy it – the staff is friendly, teachers are engaging and helpful, and they’re quite accommodating in terms of helping you find times that work around your schedule. I learned a lot here and would recommend it!
“I took a 4-week full-day Cantonese course at HKLS, and I would warmly recommend this school to anyone who would like to learn the language. I started almost from zero, and I never would have imagined that I could make so much progress in just these few weeks.
I had the chance to experience two different teachers during my course – both with great teaching skills and very cheerful, motivating and able to explain things clearly, so they made the lessons fun and the teachings easy to understand. As native speakers, they taught me lots of useful expressions that are commonly used. They were always responsive to questions, and willing to adapt the lessons to meet student’s individual interests. The lessons focus on quickly being able to use the language when communicating in real-life situations.
I would only recommend the full-day course if you are motivated to progress quickly and willing to put in some work outside of the class time as well, because it is quite a lot of input in just a short time. But it got me speaking very quickly, and this was exactly what I had been looking for.
The lessons took place in very small groups and useful materials in paper and audio files were included in the course.
I also think the school is very well organised, communication was always easy and the conditions transparent and fair. Branda and Mini made just about any possible effort to meet everybody’s needs, and I very much enjoyed the kind and welcoming atmosphere in the school.

Hi folks! I just wanted to let you all know that I started volunteering this week with a union here in San Francisco. I’m helping them outreach to Chinese workers. The Union lost their Cantonese speaking staff person almost a year ago and they haven’t been able to find a replacement. So I have been talking with the workers and yesterday i helped translate at a meeting. The meeting was conducted in Spanish English and Cantonese.
It was all really difficult for me, but the workers were really happy to have someone who could speak some Cantonese and they understood most of what I was
